In his welcome address, the General Manager, Africa Union Sports Council Region 2, (AUSC Region 2) Mr Caleb Gidado said the global day for walking is meant to encourage people to take to walking as a form of exercise.
“We are happy to welcome you to this great occasion of the World Walking day which is organised by TAFISA in conjunction with the Africa Union Commission. We at the Africa Union sports Council Region 2, we are the technical arm of the Commission responsible for the implementation of sporting activities.
The World Walking Day is a programme specifically designed to make sure that it gives people a starting block to physical activities and getting active for health fitness and then productivity in our work places,” he said.
The World Walking Day which started in 1999 is held on the first weekend of October every year organised by The Association For International Sport for All, TAFISA in partnership with member countries to promote walking as an effective form of exercise.
TAFISA is one sport for all organisations with more than 270 members from over 150 countries on all continents, TAFISA aims to achieve an active World by globally promoting and facilitating access for every person to sport for All and physical activity.
TAFISA World Walking Day is open to citizens of all ages, backgrounds, abilities and genders. It aims to integrate physical activity into the everyday lives by promoting the benefits of walking.
